New York: Pfizer Inc. has begun a three-day trial to assess whether it can help Pfizer avoid a generic version of Viagra, known as sildenafil.
The drugmaker, which also makes Viagra, has already announced it will pay $4.9 million to settle claims it illegally marketed and sold the drug without a prescription.
The move, which comes as the company has launched two generic versions of the drug, is part of an effort by the maker of two other drugs, including the anti-impotence drug Avodart and the cardiovascular agent Breo, to protect its brand.
Viagra and its generic counterpart, Levitra, are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, the drug’s active ingredient.
The drugmaker said it will continue testing its new version of Viagra to see if it can protect against a possible heart attack, while also seeking approval for other drugs that have similar side effects.
Viagra and Levitra are prescription drugs that Pfizer has made available to patients and doctors who are taking the drug, and both belong to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors.
The FDA has advised patients not to take the drug with nitrates used for angina, because the use of nitrates can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure, the FDA said.
It is not clear why Pfizer is offering such a risky drug, as it has been with the drug since 2014, when it withdrew from the market after reports of heart attacks.
Viagra has been linked to more than 2,400 adverse drug reactions, according to the FDA, which found that more than 1,100 deaths have occurred in the U. S. in 2013.
The company said it is evaluating the risk to patients and doctors and has said it will begin trials later this year to determine whether Viagra is safe.
